What are bridge expansion joints ?

Bridge expansion joints are designed to allow for continuous traffic between structures while accommodating movement, shrinkage, and temperature variations on reinforced and prestressed concrete, composite, and steel structures. They stop the bridge from bending out of place in extreme conditions, and also allow enough vertical movement to permit bearing replacement without the need to dismantle the bridge expansion joint. There are various types, which can accommodate movement from 30 to 1,000 millimeters. They have alot of advantages such as; Extended durability, Encased in corrosive resistant elastomer, Water tightness, and Smooth wear resistant surfacing.

Modular Expansion Joint

OVM Modular Expansion Joint system is developed by combining advantages of domestic and abroad products. It comprises special steel profile, rubber sealers, sliding pad, press pad, spring, displacement box and reinforcement, which is suitable for large movement bridges especially with heavy traffic. OVM Modular Expansion Joint system has advantages of good water property, large movement, easy installation and maintenance, long service life, smooth and stable for driving, etc. Modular expansion joints are used when the movements of a bridge exceed the capacity of a single gap joint or a finger type joint. Modular multiple-gap expansion joints can accommodate movements in every direction and rotations about every axis, they can be used for longitudinal movements of as little as 160 mm, or for very large movements of well over 3000 mm. The Modular Expansion Joint System is a mechanical device installed in bridge expansion joint openings. Its main function is to allow for smooth vehicular movement across expansion joint openings.

Elastomeric expansion joints

Elastomeric expansion joints are structural components designed to provide smooth passage over the gap between adjacent sides of a deck joint, while also permitting relative translation and/or rotation of the two sides of a bridge deck (deck movement joint).
Bridge elastomeric expansion joints are designed to accept both horizontal and vertical loads due to traffic in accordance with the road engineering technical standards.
rubber bridge expansion joints comprise steel angles and steel bridging plate system encased in a flexible elastomer. Bridge expansion joint is capable of sustaining loads and movements up to 330 mm without damaging the surface or supporting structure during its working life. It has good riding quality and skid resistance that is not hazardous to all road users.
